At a Glance
Dr. Barchas prepared for his medical career by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in 1956, and graduating from Yale Medical School five years later. After completing his medical internship and residency, he began work as a behavioral neurochemistry lab director at Stanford Medical School. In 1967, he began teaching psychiatry courses at the medical school, before moving south to continue teaching at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he was held the position of dean of neuroscience and research development. In 1993, he moved back east and began his position as the psychiatry department chair at Weill Cornell Medical College, and the psychiatry-in-chief at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Barchas has completed research in the investigation of neuroregulators, which has resulted in the identification of previously unrecognized neuroregulators and their role in brain, behavior, and mental disorders. His findings also included the first demonstration of differential changes of neuroregulators in the brain with stress. Additionally, he is also the co-editor of numerous publications, the associate editor of the Clinical Neuroscience Research and the author of more than 300 publications.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Barchas enjoys photography, history, High Haven Music and visiting the Shenandoah Valley.
