NEW YORK, September 28, 2016, Dr. Jack D. Barchas has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. Dr. Barchas currently serves as the Barklie McKee Henry professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is also psychiatrist-in-chief at Weill Cornell Medical Center of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and has served in several academic positions throughout his career.
The recipient of a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College and an MD from Yale Medical School, Dr. Barchas completed an internship through the University of Chicago and postdoctoral training with the National Institutes of Health before taking a residency in psychiatry at Stanford Medical School, where he taught until 1989. While at Stanford, he directed the Nancy Friend Pritzker Laboratory, served as an assistant professor of psychiatry, and taught courses on neurochemistry and behavioral neurobiology.
At the UCLA School of Medicine, where he served as dean of neuroscience and research development, Dr. Barchas was also a professor of psychiatry in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences. Since 1993, he has been affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College and the Payne Whitney Clinic in Manhattan and Westchester, which provides comprehensive, humane treatment to patients with psychiatric illnesses.
Outside of his various academic appointments, Dr. Barchas is also involved with issues affecting public policy and the delivery of safe, effective health care to those who need it most. From 1984 to 1990, he served as co-chair of the scientific advisory board and a member of the board of directors of the Neurex Corporation, which today is a leading neuroscience research organization. He also chaired a board on behavioral and mental disorders at the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, which evaluates health needs and research opportunities for the federal government.
Dr. Barchas is currently an associate editor of the scientific journal Clinical Neuroscience Research. He also authored and co-authored more than 300 articles that have appeared in scholarly publications, such as Psychopharmacology— from Theory to Practice and Neuroregulators and Psychiatric Disorders. Throughout his career, he has been honored several times for his achievements and contributions to the field of psychiatry. He was presented with the Bennett Research Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the Efron Research Award from the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the Sachar Award from Columbia University, and the Lehmann Award for Psychiatric Research from the New York State Office of Mental Health, among others.
